Barbados
The name Barbados is derived from the ‘Bearded Fig Trees’ once found in abundance on the island.. The people of Barbados have a history of long ingrained Christian principles, a sound and free educational system with a literacy rate of 97%. Barbados has the third oldest parliament in the world, with uninterrupted parliamentary governance since 1639. Barbados was the only vacation destination in this Hemisphere with a scheduled Concorde service. One of the retired British Airways concordes now resides at our international airport. Barbados is completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean (see where is Barbados). Barbados is 21 miles long and a smile (14 miles) wide! We are the only coral island in the region with all white sand beaches. Barbados has pure drinking water and was the first Caribbean island to have piped water. The island has excellent telecommunications systems. Utilities are available 100% island-wide. Barbados is easily accessible from everywhere. The maximum daily temperature is 75-90 °F year round. The island is consistently cooled by North-East trade winds.

The history of Barbados rum, rum production and its trade, is tightly intertwined with the history of the Caribbean island.
In 1625, Captain Powell stumbled upon Barbados during his world voyages and realised that Barbados would be a valuable addition to the British Empire. The Captain’s brother, along with 80 crewmen and 10 slaves returned to the island and claimed it in the name of King James I in 1627. Today, there is a monument in Holetown St. James, near to the site where the English landed, commemorating the historical event.
A History of Rum
The name ‘Rum’ is also said to have its origins right here in Barbados. In the taverns in the city of Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, sailors would overindulge in the liquid, making life a rumbustious, uncontrollable exuberance. Furthermore, it has also been suggested that the word could have originated from ‘Rumbullion’ which was a beverage made from boiling sugar cane stalks. Interestingly, the name rum was known and in use in the 17th century. In 1654 the General Court of Connecticut ordered the confiscation of ‘whatsoever Barbados liquors, commonly called rum, ‘kill devil’ and the like. This was followed by a decision made by the General Court of Massachusetts to outlaw the sale of strong liquor. The Barbados Rum clearly had a reputation far beyond the shores of the tiny island and these stories demonstrate the legacy of its place among the greatest alcoholic spirits in the world.

Thus, for decades the focus of the governing leadership has been to build an infrastructure that has many of the amenities of most ‘first world nations’. For example, the banking system has ‘ease of access’ for the transfer of funds in and out the financial system for business and personal use. The Barbados dollar is pegged at 2 to 1 when exchange to and from the US dollars. And for those interested in business at a corporate level the tax rate is very low rate of 5.5% Taxable income of up to 1 million Barbados dollars (BBD). For telecommunication purposes, the Information Technology infrastructure is on par with many larger nation.
